Prensa Latina documentary on Cuba- Sri Lanka friendship releases on 12th November 2019
Prensa Latina News Agency released a documentary on 66 years of friendship between Sri Lanka and Cuba on 12th November 2019 at an event with the participation of a large gathering of Cuban leaders and diplomatic corps based in Havana.
The audiovisual, entitled “60 years of a flourishing friendship”, summarizes in 30 minutes how bonds between Colombo and Havana have been flourishing since the two states formalized their diplomatic relations 60 years ago.
The Sri Lankan Ambassador in Cuba, A. L. Ratnapala, stressed that during six decades of friendship these two sister islands so geographically distant reinforced economic and commercial cooperation, as well as academic exchange, which is reflected in the film.
The diplomat also highlighted visit by Comandante Ernesto Che Guevara to Sri Lanka in August 1959 as a starting point for the excellent relationship between the two governments, since the first bilateral agreement was signed on that date.
For its part, the Documentary Director, Adriana Robreño, explained that title is due to the tree planted by the Heroic Guerrilla Che in Sri Lankan lands, which is a mahogany of more than 20 meters high today, a symbol of friendship between Cubans and Sri Lankans. Captain Omar Fernández Cañizares, who accompanied Che Guevara to Sri Lanka during the visit in August 1959 was also among the participants.
The presentation of the material was held at the Union of Cuban Journalists headquarters, where a photographic exhibition was also opened to demonstrate historical links between the two islands which includes snapshots of the Cuban Revolution’s historic Leader, Fidel Castro, along with Sri Lankan Presidents and students.
